(ask-her) to sprout, shoot or spring into being
EASCAIR magazine is a Belfast-based literary and visual arts magazine, founded in October 2023.
We publish poetry, flash fiction and visual art in both English and Irish.
We have published three issues as well has hosting several launch events and interactive art exhibits.

We got the name ‘EASCAIR’ from the late Manchán Magan. He was an Irish author who was deeply passionate about engaging with the Irish language through history and nature.
EASCAIR (ask-her) is an Irish verb which means to sprout, shoot or spring into being. We felt this captured our goals as a magazine hoping to provide an inclusive space for new and upcoming writers and artists, particularly those who engage with their locale.
We noticed that there was a lack of spaces where English and Irish were being published or displayed together in the North. We want to change this, and we know that lots of others do too.
We are passionate about the power of sound, particularly in spoken poetry, and have seen firsthand the impact that it can have on an audience whether they understand the language the work is written in or not.
Without the Irish language present in English dominated literary and arts spaces, we do not get to experience the impact of people’s early engagement with the language.
As we all become part of the literary and arts tradition in the North, and in Belfast in particular, we should be consciously making space for all. Without this effort, the documentation of our rich and versatile arts scene will be nearsighted and non-inclusive.
EASCAIR is a self-funded, women-led magazine with three committed editors.
